Notes for Medea
Essay
-As
a strong woman. How is Medea admirable and should be considered
tragic hero?
Medea is admirable and should be
considered a tragic hero because her situation has mimesis, a
serious purpose, direct action, and after a disastrous change in
Medea's life the audience has intense feelings of pity and horror.
Medea's life has
mimesis because it imitates real life. Medea's life is tragic
because after being hit by Cupid's arrow she loves Jason , more than
anything. Jason does not love her as much as she loves him and
leaves her for another wife. Who can better his position in society.
This is like real life. Many people get divorced and one person is
generally crushed.
There is a serious purpose in Medea and
it is more philosophical instead of historical. The purpose in Medea
is to show that you cannot obsessively love somebody, or else
tragedy will happen. It is a philosophical idea because so many
fantasy things happen that couldn't happen in real life. There is no
historical retelling of the information. It is all about large
ideas.
The purpose of Medea is to bring about
katharsis in the audience. The audience witnesses the disasters
change in Medea's life and they have feelings of pity and horror. It
is horrible that Medea kills three people. It is horrible that Jason
has cheated on her and wants a new wife. In the beginning you pity
Medea for having to put up with Jason. But by the end you pity Jason
because he has lost everything.
Medea is a tragic hero. Medea
has a noble birth, she has an admirable character because she loves
Jason so much, her peripeteia or her misfortune is brought about by
Jason cheating on her, her own weakness, or flaw is that she hates
so strongly she's willing to wreck her whole life to get what she
wants, and the reversal of fortune brings about sudden, powerful
recognition in Jason when he realizes he brought all this on
himself.
-Why
does Medea need to kill her children incorporate the turning point
of her decision in your essay
Medea needs to kill her children
because she decides is the only way to completely devastate Jason to
get her revenge.
Medea looks into her children's eyes
and decides they look like Jason's eyes. She says “They are his
cubs. They have his blood. As long as they live I shall be mixed
with him” this is the moment that Medea decides to kill them.
Medea doesn't want to hurt Jason. She
wants to completely destroy him. Earlier in the book. She decides
that if his new bride is killed, he will be hurt but at least he can
look on his two little sons and say all is not lost. She decided if
she kills his wife and his sons that he will have nothing.
Medea needs to kill their children to
show Jason that she is strong, and the winner in their fight. She
knows that she has a winged chariot to escape. Once the deed is
done. So she really has very little to lose. Medea is a strong
woman, and Jason should have known what he was getting into when he
married her. She did murder quite a few people before they even got
to his homeland.
-How
does he use extremes of emotion, love, hate, revenge, to illustrate
aspects of human nature. Include your perspective on how this would
affect the audience
Medea starts out madly in love with Jason, then she hates him
because he cheated on her and then she decides to get revenge by
destroying everything he has, and this would affect the audience by
shocking them and they would end up having pity for Jason.
Medea is struck by Cupid's arrow and
has no control over how much she loves Jason. She kills many people
to save Jason early in the relationship, including her own brother.
Her love for him is everything to her and she is crazy with her
intense love.
Once Jason leaves her for another woman
she hates him, just as much as she ever loved him. Her hate for him
is so intense that she kills the king, Jason's new wife, and even
her own two children.
Her revenge on Jason is complete only
when his entire life has been destroyed. Medea will settle for
nothing less than his complete and utter destruction. It isn't
enough just to kill his new wife because he would still have his two
beautiful boys. So she kills them too.
It is human nature to feel sorry for
Medea at the beginning because Jason is cheating on her. It is also
in human nature, by the end to feel sorry for Jason because Medea
has gone too far in her scheming for revenge. This would affect the
audience by shifting who they were rooting for from Medea to Jason.
Jason may be a jerk but he doesn't deserve what she is doing to him.
-Who
holds the higher moral ground, Jason or
Medea?
Medea holds the higher moral ground than Jason because Jason
knew exactly what he was getting into when he married her. Medea had
killed her uncle and her own brother before they were even married,
so Jason cannot be surprised by anything that she does.

The audience should care about Medea because tragedy imitates
real life and in real life people have affairs and it ruins
families. Medea is worthy of love because everything she did was
Jason’s fault. She would have been a great wife and mother if
Jason had just loved her. The audience should care about Medea
