The policy of imperialism is when a large or powerful country seeks to extend their authority or their borders through economic or political control. American imperialism began in the 1890s. In 1896 the US annexed the  Hawaiian islands. After the Spanish-American war the US annexed Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. In 1914 the US completed the Panama Canal. The Roosevelt corollary to the Monroe doctrine increased US influence in Latin America. It was the basis for Roosevelt's big stick policy. Imperialism has a long history. Imperialism has introduced people in different parts of the world to new lands and cultures. Imperial powers have often taken advantage of the people and the resources in these new lands.has had a powerful influence on world history by imposing laws, language and religion around the world. In many places that were once colonies that people still speak the language of their colonizers.
