"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible, with liberty and justice for all"

The original Pledge of Allegiance was written by Francis Bellamy. It was given publicity through the official program of the national public schools celebration of Columbus Day in 1892.

The original Pledge of Allegiance is: "I pledge allegiance to my flag and to the Republic for which it stands one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all".

The flag of the United States replace the words "my flag" in 1923. In 1924 "of America" was added after "United States". The last change in language came on Flag Day 1954 when Congress passed a law which added the words "under God" after "one nation".
