Deserts are the driest places on planet Earth. During the day deserts may be very hot, but at night they can be freezing cold. There are hot deserts, cold deserts and coastal deserts. Deserts are found on all seven continents. Most deserts are located in subtropical regions around the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. There are also deserts in the polar regions. Almost 1,000,000,000 (a billion) people live in desert regions. To be considered a desert region it must receive less than 25 cm or 10 inches of rain per year. Animals and plants that live in desert have adapted to their environment. The world's coldest dry desert is located in Antarctica.
