There are lots of rules for subject and verb agreements. The basic rule is a singular subject takes a singular verb and a plural subject takes a plural verb. For example: Mike picks up the box (Singular). The kittens pick up the boxes (Plural).

The most common subject verb mistake is made when the subject comes before a phrase beginning with of. For example: A bouquet of yellow roses lend color and fragrance ( incorrect). A bouquet of yellow roses lends color and fragrance (correct). There are plenty of other subject verb agreement rules but this is the one is broken most often.
