A tessellation is created when a shape is repeated over and over again covering a plane without any gaps or overlaps. Tiling is another word for tessellation. There are three types of tessellation: translation, rotation and reflection. There are some shapes that cannot tessellate by themselves including circles. It is impossible to put a series of circles next to each other without having a gap.
