The main function of a leaf is to produce food to help a plant grow by photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is the substance that gives plants their characteristic green color. It absorbs light energy and turns it into food for the plant. Why do leaves turn colors in the fall? Leaves turn colors in the fall because of changes in the length of daylight and changes in temperature. As the leaf slowly dies it turns from yellow to orange and sometimes even red. But don't worry, next year brand-new leaves will grow in their place. How do trees grow? During photosynthesis plants take the water from the soil and the carbon dioxide from the air and make sugar out if it. When plants have just the right balance of sunlight, air, nutrients and water their cells can grow and divide and become larger.
