Modern Art
I choose the painting GOOD vs. EVIL by
Abraaolucas. Oscar Wilde wrote, “Those who find a beautiful meanings
in beautiful things are the cultivated. For these there is hope.” I
completely agree with that opinion. In the painting the dog looks
vicious, his jaws completely open ready to pounce. His eyes look fixed
on his next meal, a tiny mouse. Nothing about the dog looks kind or
gentle. It would be easy to assume that the dog plans to eat the small
mouse. I choose not to look at this piece of art that way. Perhaps the
dog is simply cold and tired of being in the rain. Maybe they are best
friends and he forgot his umbrella and the mouse is sharing with him.
If you look at this art and assume the worst-case scenario it is easy
to find hopelessness in this painting. If, on the other hand, you go
in with an open mind and heart you can draw your own conclusions. I
choose to believe that the dog and mouse are friends. The dog yells,
screams and shouts when things do not go his way and his
long-suffering friend mouse simply puts up with it, because their
buddies, and well frankly what can you do? Looking at the painting
artistically you cannot help but notice the incredible details. The
artist portrays the warm kindness from mouse’s eyes. The
ridiculously small umbrella meant to save his dear friend from the
cold. The way the light shimmers off the individual raindrops. It
looks like they are in an alley and the light source from above shines
directly on the top of the dog head illuminating the incredible
details of his snout and nose. I believe Oscar Wilde is trying to say
in his preface that if you go in with preconceived notions of what
something should be you haven't taken the time to appreciate the art
involved in creating it in the first place. I choose to find a
beautiful meaning in this beautiful piece of art.
