Photosynthesis and Chlorophyll
 Overview Notes

Photosynthesis an overview Chlorophyll and Chloroplasts

Light energy from the sun travels to the earth in the form of light. White light is a mixture of different wavelengths.

Pigment plants gather the sun's energy with light absorbing molecules called pigments photosynthetic organisms capture energy from sunlight with pigments. The plants principal pigment is chlorophyll. There are two types of chlorophyll implants chlorophyll a and chlorophyll B.

Chloroplasts photosynthesis takes place inside organelles called chloroplasts. Chloroplasts contains thylakoids the fluid portion of the chloroplast is known as the stroma.

Energy collection chlorophyll absorbs visible light especially well the energy is transferred directly to electrons in the chlorophyll molecule itself light energy can produce a steady supply of high-energy electrons which is what makes photosynthesis work

High-energy electrons the high-energy electrons produced by chlorophyll are highly reactive and require a special carrier. An electron carrier is a compound that can accept a pair of high-energy electrons and transfer them along with most of the energy to make a molecule what are these molecule carriers is NADP

Photosynthesis That uses the energy of sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide reactants into high-energy sugars and oxygen products

Carbon dioxide plus water makes sugars plus oxygen

Light dependent reactions are the first set of reactions they require the direct involvement of light and light absorbing pigments oxygen is released as a byproduct

light independent reactions ATP and NADPH molecules produced in the light dependent reactions are used to produce high-energy sugars from carbon dioxide.

Byproduct means anything produced in the course of making something else

Analogy NADP is a carrier molecule that transport pairs of electrons and is similar to how an of and it is used to transport a hot object like a baked potato the heat is each the potato is to ease in the oven mitt is NADP+ went to pick up the potato the heat is transferred on to the oven mitt
