The ancient Greek island of Atlantis is a fictional island mentioned by Plato in his book Timaeus and Critias. The island was submerged into the Atlantic after falling out of favor with the gods. The Atlantis myth is often associated with the island of Thera ( now the Greek island of Santorini). This island was partially destroyed by a volcanic eruption 3600 years ago. The word Atlantis has often been used to describe lost civilizations and continues to inspire contemporary film and fiction.
