There are two main political parties in the United States, the Democrats and Republicans. There are also many smaller parties that are not as well known. There was a major party realignment in the late 20th century and since then the Democratic party has generally been considered the center left and more liberal party in the Republican Party has been the center right and more conservative party. This two-party system is based on custom and not outlined in the United States Constitution. There are many third parties that operate in the United States some of the largest include the Libertarian party, the Green party and the Constitution party. These parties receive minimal support and generally only appear on voting ballots in a few states.
