Solving Word Problems
Free Math Games & Activities for Kids
In general there are five steps to solving a word problem in math.
- Identify the problem. Begin by determining the scenario the problem wants you to solve.
- Gather information. Create a table, graph, chart or a list that outlines the information that you know, and leave blanks for any information that you do not know.
- Create an equation that will allow you to solve the problem.
- Solve the problem
- Verify the answer
In common core mathematics students are asked to model word problems. Common core mathematics believes that problem solving does not stop with the answer. The process must continue after the answer to use common sense, or reason, about whether the answer makes sense. Students are asked to model basic number relationships in kindergarten through fifth grade by physically joining or separating, multiplying or dividing physical objects to solve prolbems. Teachers can then transition students to more complex mathematical ideas to solve word problems that have more difficulty in the future.
