All Kinds of Plants
Free Games & Activities
The three main part of the plant are the roots, the leaves and the stem. Each part of the plant has its own job to do to keep the plant healthy. The roots absorb water and minerals from the soil and anchor the plant to the ground. The stem supports the plant above the ground. The leaves collect energy from the sun and make food for the plant using an amazing process called photosynthesis.
The main function of a leaf is to produce food to help a plant grow by photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is the substance that gives plants their characteristic green color. It absorbs light energy and turns it into food for the plant. Why do leaves turn colors in the fall? Leaves turn colors in the fall because of changes in the length of daylight and changes in temperature. As the leaf slowly dies it turns from yellow to orange and sometimes even red. But don't worry, next year brand-new leaves will grow in their place. How do trees grow? During photosynthesis plants take the water from the soil and the carbon dioxide from the air and make sugar out if it. When plants have just the right balance of sunlight, air, nutrients and water their cells can grow and divide and become larger.
Plants need carbon dioxide, water and sunlight to make photosynthesis work. By taking in water through the roots, carbon dioxide from the air and light energy from the sun plants can perform photosynthesis. Photosynthesis transforms all of this energy into glucose that make plants grow.
