Carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns is a popular Halloween tradition that originated hundreds of years ago in Ireland. Back then jack-o'-lanterns were made out of turnips or potatoes, not pumpkins. It wasn't until Irish immigrants arrived in America and discovered that pumpkins were even easier to carve that jack-o'-lanterns made out of pumpkins became tradition. Pumpkins are nutritious and versatile orange fruit harvested in October. Many Americans include pumpkin pie in their Thanksgiving meals.

Pumpkins represent one of the earliest cultivated foods in the Western Hemisphere. Over 9000 years ago indigenous people of North America were growing pumpkins, long before they cultivated corns or beans.

Agriculture is another word for farming. Agriculture includes harvesting crops and raising animals for livestock. Agriculture provides the food and raw materials that we need to survive. Agriculture is the heart of our daily life and vital to the economy and to our community. Farming cannot exist without farmers producing high-quality safe foods for us to eat.
