Is a rainfall made acidic by pollution found in the atmosphere. The main cause of acid rain is the industrial burning of coal and other fossil fuels that combined with atmospheric water to form acid. Acid rain has elevated levels of hydrogen ions and can have a harmful effect on plants, animals and people. Liquids with the pH of less than 7 are acidic and those with a pH greater than 7 are alkaline.

When did we discover acid rain?

Acidic rain was discovered in 1853 but it wasn't until the late 1960s that scientists began to study the environmental phenomenon. Industrial acid rain is a substantial problem in Russia and China. Scientists believe it is because these countries burn sulfur containing coal to generate heat and electricity. Hubbard Brook in the United States was an echo system studied and analyzed and found to be the first United States echo system significantly affected by acid rain in 1972.
