What is the difference between nuclear fission and nuclear fusion?
Both are nuclear reactions that produce energy but the applications are not the same. Vision is the splitting of heavy unstable nucleus into two lighter nuclei. And nuclear fusion is the process where to light nuclei combined together releasing vast amounts of energy. Nuclear fission of heavy elements was discovered in 1938 by Otto Hahn. In order for fission to produce energy the total binding energy of the resulting elements must be more negative than that of the starting element. The amount of energy contained in nuclear fuel is millions of times the amount of energy contained in a similar mass of chemical fuel like gasoline making nuclear fission of very dense source of energy.
