The pH of acids and bases is a scale used to specify the acidity or the basicity of a solution. acids and bases are the two extremes that describe a chemical property of chemicals. mixing acids and bases can cancel out or neutralize their effects.

Acids and Bases: Acids and bases are chemicals. Almost all liquids are either acids or bases. The type of ions will determine if it is an acid or base. If the liquid has a lot of hydrogen ions it is an acid. If the liquid has a lot of hydroxide ions it is a base. Acids and bases are measured in the pH scale. A pH scale measures from 0 to 14. The pH scale from 0 to 7 are acids where zero is the strongest acid. The pH scale from 7 to 14 are bases with 14 being the strongest base. If the liquid has a pH of 7 it is called neutral. A good example of a neutral base is distilled water.

The Human Body and PH Levels: The pH of cells is 6.8 and the pH of blood is 7.4 both are very close to being neutral. The environment of your stomach is highly acidic with the pH of one or two. how can stomach cells survive in such an acidic environment? The answer is they can't! new stomach cells are being produced constantly to replace the dead ones which are digested by the stomach acids. The lining of a human stomach is completely replaced every 7 to 10 days. Seawater has a pH of 8.0 it is not quite neutral but marine organisms have adapted to the saline environment and are able to thrive.
